Cold, Flu & Cough Care in Bangkok

A runny nose, fever or persistent cough can interrupt work, sleep and travel. Start with a clear assessment and a treatment plan matched to the cause.

Is it a cold, flu or another respiratory infection?

Colds commonly cause a runny or blocked nose, sore throat and cough. Influenza often begins more abruptly with fever, body aches and marked tiredness. COVID-19 and other infections can overlap with either pattern, so symptoms alone may not identify the virus. A GP considers the whole picture rather than treating the label “flu” as a diagnosis.

What will the doctor check?

Tell the doctor when symptoms began, whether they are improving, your highest temperature and any shortness of breath. The visit includes a relevant examination and review of medicines, allergies and health conditions. Flu or COVID-19 testing may be useful when the result would change treatment or precautions; not every cough needs blood tests or an X-ray.

Seek an early review if you have a higher risk of complications, such as pregnancy or significant heart, lung or immune conditions. Antiviral decisions can be time-sensitive.

What treatment can help?

Treatment may include medicines for fever or discomfort, selected relief for nasal symptoms, fluids and rest. Your doctor checks for duplicated ingredients in combination cold medicines and interactions with your regular treatment. Antibiotics treat selected bacterial infections; they do not treat ordinary cold or flu viruses.

For influenza, prescription antivirals can shorten illness and reduce some complications in appropriate patients. They work best when started early, ideally within 48 hours; later treatment can still matter for severe illness or higher-risk patients. Your assessment determines whether this is relevant to you.

Why do the first 48 hours of flu matter?

Flu antivirals work best when started within two days of the first symptoms. The clock starts when you became ill, not when a test became positive. Earlier treatment can reduce symptom severity and shorten illness. Do not assume that treatment is pointless after 48 hours: severe illness and a higher risk of complications change the decision.

Oseltamivir, also known by the brand Tamiflu, is one oral flu antiviral. It treats influenza rather than ordinary colds and is not an antibiotic. A usual uncomplicated-flu treatment course is five days; the clinician determines the prescription for the individual. Nausea and vomiting are recognised side effects. Discuss kidney problems, pregnancy and other medicines before treatment.

How long should symptoms last?

Flu fever and other symptoms often settle within about a week, although cough and tiredness can last longer. Arrange reassessment if fever persists, symptoms worsen after improving, or cold symptoms continue beyond 10 days without improvement. Recovery advice should fit your job, travel and contact with people at higher risk.

Common questions

Does green mucus mean I need antibiotics?

Not by itself. Mucus colour does not reliably distinguish a viral cold from a bacterial infection. Your symptoms, examination and course of illness guide treatment.

Can Kauri provide medicine for cold symptoms?

Yes. Following assessment, the doctor can provide suitable medication for common symptoms and explain how to use it. Bring any products you have already taken to avoid overlapping ingredients.

Can I get a sick-leave certificate?

The doctor can issue a sick-leave certificate after consultation when supported by the assessment. The recommended rest period depends on your condition and work requirements.
