Who counts as a food handler in Bangkok?
This includes people involved in preparing, cooking, serving or selling food and handling equipment that comes into contact with food. Common examples are restaurant cooks, café staff, caterers, hotel kitchen teams and school-canteen workers. A food-handler health assessment concerns hygiene and communicable-disease risk, rather than only general fitness for office work.
Bangkok’s food-premises rules require appropriate health status and food-hygiene training. A medical certificate and a training certificate serve different purposes. Food manufacturing, particular occupations or employer programmes may have additional requirements; the relevant authority’s current rules determine the accepted documentation.
What does Bangkok guidance say should be checked?
Bangkok’s published manual describes a general and skin examination, lung assessment with chest X-ray or sputum AFB and throat examination, hepatitis A blood testing, and stool examination or rectal-swab culture for intestinal pathogens and parasites. These describe the official assessment framework—not a claim that every investigation is included in Kauri’s listed package.
Kauri’s published pathway is a physician examination and stool test. The team checks any further requirement for your submission before the certificate is completed. If you have old X-ray films or reports, please bring them because they can help the doctor’s assessment.
Why is stool testing used for food handlers?
Some intestinal infections can be carried even when a person feels well. Organisms may pass from contaminated hands to food, utensils or surfaces. Stool testing looks for the organisms covered by the ordered test; it complements the medical history and examination rather than testing for every possible infection.
Kauri’s existing stool-test pathway addresses food-borne infections including Salmonella, Shigella, cholera organisms and intestinal parasites. Culture and parasite examination are different laboratory methods; the collection kit and laboratory request determine how the sample is processed. The team explains the collection instructions before you take the kit home.
How do I collect and return the stool sample?
Kauri provides a collection kit at your visit. Use the supplied container and follow the instructions on the amount, labelling, storage and return time. Avoid contamination with urine, toilet water or cleaning products. Tell the team if you have recently taken antibiotics or cannot return the sample within the instructed period.
The 3–5-day result period starts when the clinic receives the sample, not when you first book or collect the kit. Arrange the visit and sample return ahead of your employment deadline. A sample needing recollection or a result needing follow-up can extend completion time.
Is a food-handler medical certificate valid for 3 years?
No—the documents must be distinguished. Bangkok’s manual calls for health examination and medical evidence at least annually, and says the medical certificate is usable for 1 month from the examination date. The separate food-hygiene training evidence has a 3-year validity under Bangkok’s training guidance. Annual health checks, submission recency and training renewal are three different timelines.
| Medical examination cycle | At least annually under Bangkok guidance |
|---|---|
| Medical certificate for submission | 1 month from examination in the cited Bangkok manual |
| Food-hygiene training evidence | 3 years under Bangkok training guidance |
What happens if symptoms or test results need attention?
The physician explains the finding and whether treatment, repeat testing or a temporary change in duties is needed. A positive result needs interpretation; the practical aim is appropriate care and a safe return to food handling. Certificate completion depends on the clinical assessment and required evidence.
Tell your supervisor and seek assessment if you develop diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, jaundice or an infected wound. Do not rely on an earlier normal certificate to continue handling food while unwell. Hand hygiene, safe food preparation and reporting illness remain important after the certificate is issued.
What should I bring for the food-handler assessment?
Bring your Thai ID or passport and relevant medical or medication records. No fasting is needed for the listed examination and stool-test pathway. If you have district-office or employer instructions, bring them for any additional checks; you can still book the initial consultation without a special form.

Patient questions
More questions before your certificate visit
What is a food-handler medical certificate?
It is a physician’s health document used to assess whether a food handler has illness or carriage relevant to food safety. Kauri’s listed pathway includes physician examination and stool testing, with results in 3–5 days after the sample is received. The doctor reviews the findings and the applicable requirements before completing the certificate.
Can I get a food-handler certificate the same day?
The listed Kauri pathway requires stool-test results, which take 3–5 days after sample receipt. Plan ahead rather than expecting the final certificate at the first visit.
Is this the same as a five-disease employment certificate?
No. Food-handler assessment focuses on health and infection risks relevant to food handling. A general employment certificate does not automatically provide the examination and laboratory evidence needed for food-safety documentation.
Does the medical certificate replace food-hygiene training?
No. The medical document concerns health; training evidence concerns completion of the required food-hygiene education. Keep both records and follow their separate renewal requirements.
Why test if I feel completely well?
Some intestinal pathogens can be carried without obvious symptoms. A health history, examination and the relevant tests provide different pieces of information about food-safety risk.
Is a blood test the same as a stool culture?
No. They use different samples and answer different questions. A stool culture looks for selected intestinal organisms; a blood test such as hepatitis A testing assesses a different infection. The requested health documentation determines what evidence is needed.
