Skin Rashes & Infections
An itchy or irritated patch is not always an allergy. The appearance, location and course of a rash help distinguish inflammation from infection and guide effective treatment.
What can cause an itchy rash?
Common causes include eczema, irritation from products and fungal infections. Eczema often causes dry, itchy or cracked skin that can flare repeatedly. Ringworm is a fungal infection—not a worm—and may form scaly, expanding patches. Appearance varies with skin tone, and different conditions can look alike.
What will the doctor check?
Tell the doctor when the rash appeared, whether it spreads, itches or hurts, and what products or medicines you recently started. Bring the creams you have used and photos showing changes. Examination helps decide whether skin care, medication, testing or specialist review is the next useful step.
Why does the right cream matter?
Inflamed skin and infected skin need different treatments. Eczema care may include moisturisers and an appropriate anti-inflammatory cream. Fungal infections need antifungal treatment; a steroid cream used on an undiagnosed fungal rash can make it worse or hide its appearance. Kauri can provide suitable medication after the rash is assessed.
When might a rash be a bacterial infection?
Increasing pain, warmth, swelling, spreading redness or pus needs medical review. Cellulitis is an infection in deeper skin layers and often needs antibiotics. The extent, speed of spread, fever and your overall health determine whether clinic treatment or hospital assessment is appropriate.

When should you return for review?
Follow the agreed treatment and review plan. Return if the rash spreads, changes character or does not improve as expected. Scalp or nail fungal disease, extensive involvement and repeated treatment failure may need a different approach. Avoid sharing towels when a contagious fungal infection is suspected.
Common questions
Is every itchy rash an allergy?
No. Eczema, irritation and infection can all itch. The history and appearance guide diagnosis; an allergy blood panel is not a universal rash test.
Can I use a steroid cream on ringworm?
Do not self-treat suspected ringworm with a steroid cream. It can worsen or disguise the fungal infection. Have the rash assessed for suitable antifungal treatment.
Can Kauri provide medication for a skin infection?
Yes, for conditions suitable for GP care after assessment. Treatment is selected for the suspected cause; more extensive or severe disease may need referral.
