Dengue Vaccination in Bangkok

Understand dengue, reduce your risk and plan Qdenga vaccination around your health and life in Thailand.

What is dengue, and what does Qdenga protect against?

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause fever, significant body pain and, in some people, serious bleeding or circulation problems. Qdenga is a vaccine designed against all four dengue virus types. Kauri offers Qdenga to help eligible patients reduce their risk of dengue illness and hospitalisation, alongside everyday mosquito protection.

How do you catch dengue in Thailand?

Dengue usually spreads when an infected Aedes mosquito bites a person. These mosquitoes commonly bite during daylight and live around homes and urban areas, so exposure is not limited to jungles or rural travel. The infection does not normally spread through coughing, hugging or sharing a meal.

What symptoms and warning signs should you recognise?

Symptoms can include sudden fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle or joint pain, nausea and rash. Many infections are mild, but worsening symptoms need attention even when the fever starts to settle. Severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, breathing difficulty or marked weakness require urgent medical assessment.

Why consider dengue vaccination in Bangkok?

Living in a dengue-endemic setting means repeated opportunities for exposure. Having dengue once does not give lifelong protection against every type, and a later infection with another type can be more severe. Vaccination adds a preventive layer before the next exposure; it is not a treatment for a current fever.

Qdenga studies demonstrated fewer symptomatic dengue cases and fewer dengue-related hospital admissions. Protection varies with virus type, prior infection and time since vaccination. This is why a useful plan combines the vaccine course with repellent, screens and removal of standing water.

How many Qdenga doses are needed?

The Qdenga course is 2 injections given 3 months apart. The Thai FDA-hosted product information specifies use from 4 years of age; individual eligibility also depends on official recommendations and clinical assessment. WHO’s public-programme recommendation for children aged 6–16 in high-transmission settings is a different question from the product’s licensed age range.

Bring any previous dengue or vaccination records. If a dose is delayed, ask the clinic to arrange the next date rather than restarting the course yourself. For travel, plan ahead so both appointments fit your itinerary.

Who should discuss Qdenga with a physician first?

A short review covers age, previous dengue, pregnancy plans, immune conditions and medicines. Qdenga is a live attenuated vaccine and is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in certain immunodeficiency states. Avoid pregnancy for at least 1 month after vaccination. Tell the clinician about a severe vaccine allergy or recent blood products. Evidence in people over 60 is limited, so this needs an individual discussion.

What can you expect after the injection?

A sore arm, headache, muscle aches, tiredness or a short-lived fever can occur. Most common reactions are mild to moderate and settle within a few days. Keep your vaccination record and second-dose appointment. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or collapse, and get a new or persistent fever assessed rather than assuming it is a vaccine reaction.

More vaccine questions, answered

Can I have Qdenga if I have never had dengue?

Qdenga is not restricted in the same way as the older Dengvaxia vaccine to people with a documented previous infection. However, previous infection and exposure risk influence the benefit discussion. Kauri reviews these factors before recommending a course.

Can I still get dengue after vaccination?

Yes. Vaccination reduces risk but does not prevent every case. Continue mosquito precautions and seek assessment for symptoms, particularly warning signs as a fever settles.

Is Qdenga an annual vaccine?

No annual Qdenga schedule is established. The product course is 2 doses 3 months apart; the need for a booster has not been established in the cited product information.
